i hope everyone's had a good time! be wise and stay warm for the winter still ahead, folks!

this is more autumnal than wintry but take it anyway
[deviantARTtwitter]

i tidied my room today to make room for a huge beanbag i got as a gift. it would be amazing to draw in that thing, but it'd involve moving a few things around to get my PC in the right place, so we'll see if i can make that work. if not, it'll make a great reading/lounging/napping spot. my back has been hurting lately and it really feels good to sit in it, since the "beans" move around a bit like memory foam

i might see about getting some fairy lights to string up in my room for next year. maybe see if my parents are ok with me putting up some posters - i'm worried about damaging the paint since we're trying to sell the house but this room is just so BLEAK and white/grey and euahgh

my new year's resolution is to stop drinking altogether, cold turkey, WITH the exception of actually leaving my house and going out to drink socially (which is a deterrent, for me, because i am introverted and tired and that is a lot of effort) so uhh i guess we'll see about that too.

i also want to draw more, and faster, and also to play more Furcadia. be the activity you want to see in the world, or whatever.

it's been a nice, quiet holiday. i'm working again tomorrow, like i was on xmas eve, and then i'll be working on new year's eve, but that just means more money and at this point i'm getting to a stage where it's not that much of a struggle to motivate myself to get up in the morning (close friends will know why) so that's fine...

i wanna say a big thanks to everyone who's become/remained my friend over the years. everyone's an absolute star. y'all know who you are. [clinks glass ceremonially]

just logged out of tumblr for what may well be the last time unless i go back to delete. 🤘

in other news, [community profile] the_great_tumblr_purge is active with a lot of people who're trying this site out, so if you haven't looked there for new potential friends/mutuals lately, i recommend it!

may i offer you a simple umbreon in these trying times?

Leave a word, any word, in the comments below, and I will tell you a fact about myself relating to that word.

i might also update the journal to include the word/fact in the post!

i recently tried a couple of games, and i'm no reviewer but i gotta talk about them SOMEwhere

Graveyard Keeper

this game is basically Stardew Valley but you're in charge of fixing up a graveyard and also doing autopsies and secretly selling the meat to the local tavern and also sometimes the fancypants local priest visits and sometimes the inquisitor has a witch-burning social with you. i have never played Stardew Valley

Sewer Rave

so, you're attending a rave in a sewer, and there's rats there. mostly this is about exploring all the rooms and reading all the things the rats have to say (or squeak) to you, but there are also jumping puzzles sometimes, and there are five RAT ITEMS to collect and a door to unlock. i haven't finished this yet. i gotta be in the right mindset. the mindset to attend a RAT RAVE IN A SEWER. it's silly and fun and quirky. just be warned there are, sometimes, weird controls that kinda simulate being drunk or high, and loud music, and if you have epilepsy or severe motion sickness this game might not be a good match for you

they're fun i recommend them and i promised myself i'd stop wasting time with games when i should be doing art but ALAS, COGNITIVE SURPLUS THEORY OR WHATEVER

last night i had a dream about going to a small group of about 5 nearly-empty cabins in the middle of a pine forest during winter. it was snowing real hard and everything was covered in white and it was cold, but i'd apparently volunteered to go to this place with another few dudes who don't exist irl and i brought all three cats. the cabins were small and only had a bed each, everything was bare except for a light, but with three cats and some friends living nearby i was ready to do whatever it was we were out there to do. forestry? man i dunno. it was cold but i was super comfortable

anyway then it turned into a dream where we got on a spaceship helping out some actual transformers. i think they were mostly non-canon generic kinda transformers but they worked under some version of optimus prime? me and the other cabins-in-the-woods people were sneaking around the ship looking for evidence of betrayal or something and it was exciting and good. we were high tech super spies. and i think i had to chase my cats out of the mission more than once. go home idiots

i don't normally have (or remember??) dreams, much less about my actual interests, so it was rad to finally have one about living in nature AND about transformers in one fell swoop!! nice.

hi! for anyone coming to dreamwidth from tumblr who may have stumbled across my journal, welcome!

you can absolutely approach me via commenting on this post if you need something explained. i have anonymous commenting turned on!

EDIT: Dreamwidth Staff made a post in [site community profile] dw_news addressing people who might be migrating from Tumblr! this is also worth a read! there are SO many communities being recommended in the comments that you should definitely go have a look!

here's some basics for you!
  • YES, you can post as long or short as you like, and NO, you don't have to wait until you can craft a big long post. you can use this site similarly to Tumblr if you like. no one's gonna fight you over how casual you are. it's your journal! use it how you feel comfortable!
  • YES, you can edit your journal theme's CSS/HTML and customise it how you like
  • your READING PAGE is like your dashboard!
  • your tags save for later use, so it's wise to use tags on Dreamwidth for actually organising stuff, because you only have 1000 tag slots on a free account
  • get familiar with the Privacy tab in your Account Settings! it's massively useful for managing who can see your entries/posts, setting whether IP addresses are logged, from whom you can receive comments and private messages, and whether your journal is to be included in the sitewide search
  • Granting Access and using Filters is how you manage who can and can't see your posts. you can set posts as public, as only visible to certain circles of friends, as only visible to one person, etc. and generally customise your journal's access levels post by post. VERY USEFUL if you intend to post private content or if you have sensitive personal issues to discuss that you don't want everyone and their mother to see
  • your overall journal AND each individual post have Age Restriction settings! use them wisely!
  • Comment Screening can allow only the poster and the commenter to view their thread of replies, and make them invisible to anyone else. if you're a very private person, you could use screening on your personal posts so that if you're discussing something sensitive with someone, to all other eyes it'll look like the journal has no comments on it at all.
  • you get 15 free slots for icons that can each be a max of 100x100 pixels in size. you can use these to show what mood you're in when you make a post or comment, and if you're into pretty graphics, there are communities for finding nice icons people have edited into life, and you can totally make your own too. experiment! they're fun! if you need more icon slots there's a subscription system that helps to keep Dreamwidth alive and kicking :^)

SOME USEFUL LINKS

[community profile] the_great_tumblr_purge - a new community that has sprung up specifically to help Tumblr migrants find their feet! go make good use of it!
[community profile] addme - a friending community where you make a post talking about what you like and inviting others to become mutuals with you so you can talk about your interests
[community profile] addme_fandom - the same concept, but with fandom stuff!
[community profile] fandomcalendar - find events and fun activities that people are setting up to take place to do with fandoms you might be into!
[community profile] metaquotes - a just-for-fun community where you post funny/quirky/interesting quotes from people here on Dreamwidth. it's a good place to browse :^)
[community profile] questionoftheday - a daily prompt question to inspire you to make a post when you're stuck for what to write! (you don't have to do it every day - it's a great inspiration safety net, though!)
[community profile] writtoast - this is a community for casual shitposting that i set up a while back because i know people can be worried that they need to make BIG LONG ELOQUENT POSTS here, when that isn't the case at all! it's quiet now, but anyone can feel free to post there about whatever they want and i'm likely to give it a boost if people seem interested

i'll be adding more links to useful communities as i remember them! if anyone has any good suggestions, please let me know! again, i have anonymous commenting switched on, so don't be shy even if you don't have an account 👍

i went for 2 runs that averaged 4 miles each and, as someone who doesn't do a goddamn jot of cardio on a daily basis, i'm pretty sure my legs fell off. like, they're back on now, but i know they fell off. you could not convince me otherwise. hot damn.

the reason i did so much jogging is because i finally downloaded and tried out Zombies, Run! and oh wrow, i am invested. the voice acting is sometimes super good and other times not so fab, but even the not-fab parts kind of sound natural, like someone genuinely is having trouble communicating the fact that he's upset that another character turned their radio off in a post-apoc world. you can sort of let a lot of the not-so-great parts slide for that reason, and the good parts are really good!

i didn't want to believe the hype, but honestly, i really enjoyed my taste of the app so far, and when i get a job again i'm gonna probably get myself a subscription so that i can try out the different gamemodes and not have to wait a week between plot episodes.

i'm thinking of starting up a youtube series of me telling dumb stories (maybe to a limited animation/animatic?), but it's actually surprisingly hard to think of good stories that aren't confidential. i dunno if i'll make anything of it but i guess more on that later.

i also finished a redraw of the first page of my long-haul fantasy comic, and it looks good! i'll try to work through some more and post them somewhere. the hardest part is trying to remind myself not to spend too long fussing over small details. it's a bad habit of mine to get bogged down in that kind of thing and ultimately never finish a project.

in other news i started watching The Dragon Prince on Netflix. and it is!!! super good!!! it's about three kids going on a mission to save a fantasy kingdom; one is a dorky mage, one is a naive little kid, and one is a hardcore elf with a fake scottish accent. there's also a character who speaks entirely in sign language and some of it is left untranslated so i, a dipshit, has no idea what's being said. i've always meant to learn! but yeah, it's cool that they animated all the handsigns with care. aside from that, the plot is also really gripping me! i miss high fantasy for every 5 seconds i spend not consuming it!! give me high fantasy or give me death

this has been a post

i didn't like any of the prompt lists i found, and i already got halfway through the original inktober challenge prompts last year - so i threw a new one together myself. it's made up of some of my favourite TV Tropes so this ought to be fun!! i'll be doing this as a big messy combo of fanart and OCs. if you're not sure what a trope means, these are all taken straight from the TV Tropes site, so... copy paste that shit :^)

custom inktober prompt list! )

i'll probably link these as i do them!
