speakeasy

hmmm this was a tough one so it's gonna be kind of a random answer but, sometimes i miss when all of my friends used to be in the same chat and everyone talked junk at all hours. it felt busy and cool and like a weird secret club. nowadays none of my friends have similar interests so i just talk to everyone individually, and like, that's fine! i still love all my friends. i just miss when my discord was busy and everyone was cackling their asses off and being noisy and wild at 3am. it was some good times!

that's about as close to a "speakeasy" as i've ever gotten, and it's a stretch haha.

lush

i love the word "lush" and i mostly associate it with forests and natural spaces. but there is also, as we all know, a store called Lush, so i'm gonna give you THIS fact: i HATE going in there! i am socially anxious and having employees standing around Waiting To Help Me is so intimidating. just let me smell the soaps!! i know it's your job to ask me if i need any help but i would MUCH rather you just didn't! this has been an open letter to whoever decided lush employees had to actively look to interact with the customers hahah

oh yeah, that's super aggravating. (as a retail wage slave myself (though not for lush!), i can tell you it isn't any more fun from the other direction...)

this sort of thing (and also people trying to upsell you stuff you don't want as you're paying for the stuff you do want) is always due to upper management deciding this helps sales. and if an employee is found NOT doing that, they can be terminated. it sucks, let me tell you. :/

YEAH... it's not the fault of the employees who have to do it! it's whoever's up in the PR or marketing or whatever department of the company who had the bright idea that customers want that sort of thing (and which most of us do not. rich people, maybe? people who are used to being butlered and the centre of attention? i don't know!!)

RETAIL IS A WILD RIDE and i'm sure everyone would like to get off

ok how about...

PLANE

I LOVE FLYING. i don't often have the opportunity to get on a plane but i think it's amazing that we've made something that can take us across the world while soaring above the cloud layer. i used to imagine all sorts of fantasy creatures and stuff living on the clouds when i was a little kid and i got so excited when i got to go on my first plane (that i could remember). it was exactly as beautiful up there as i always imagined!

i'm torn, though, because plane travel leaves a huge carbon footprint. it's a shame! we need to just, i dunno, make planes that run on sheer willpower lmsdfkj

I never really enjoyed actually being on an airplane, but traveling is great. XD

travelling IS great!! i'd love to do more of it 💛 guess i better save up haha

Toast.

i'm someone who has to eat something in the morning or else i'm wrecked until lunch, but i also sometimes can't stomach anything like cereal or porridge or else i get a little nauseous. toast is the obvious plain-jane solution, so i normally just have toast every morning.

~~i also burn it more often than i care to admit because my household can never agree on where the dial should be on the toaster~~

jungle :V

whenever i see documentaries on TV of people backpacking through dense jungles all i can think of is how much i wanna go to one and just disappear into the woods and never interact with society again. the thought passes quickly when more logical thoughts chase it out, like "you'd die tho" and "what about food and internet" but the romantic notion of just fucking off into the goddamn woods haunts me with every passing year

Arm.

i've never broken any limbs, but i do have a ganglion on my left wrist that makes it hard to do things like push-ups or hit things with my left. guess if i ever get mega fit i'll have to have the right half of my body be super hench and the left can just stay comically tiny

Hobby.

i always figured when i was younger that art would be a career for me, but i almost quit once in my teen years when i got upset because i felt i wasn't improving enough to ever be good enough to earn money from what i do. i packed up my tablet and almost sold it. in the end, it took seeing some really good Homestuck fanart to snap me out of it and remind me why i draw in the first place: because it's fun to create.

i'm really glad i didn't quit. it's still a hobby of mine and always will be, and it only takes one glance back to see i've improved a lot. :^0

That sucks so much - I'm glad you didn't stop drawing, though. I feel like there's so much pressure to *do* something with creative hobbies. Honestly, it's so counterproductive, and sad.

yes!!! i was constantly being asked over and over by family if i was going to do something with my art "when i grew up" and i guess when i DID grow up, i just felt like... i'd failed somehow and i should just pack it in and focus my efforts on other things. like, free up some time that i would be using to doodle aimlessly, and spend it on jobhunting or learning something else instead.

but i'm also really glad i didn't. art has been a huge source of comfort AND i eventually got good enough that sometimes people will offer me money for it and to be honest that's just what time and effort does!!!! it's the same for most hobbies. if a "silly" hobby makes someone happy, i'll always support it!!
